Peri-implantitis
Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory problem affecting the hard and soft tissues of dental implants. When the tissues become inflamed, it also affects the bone structure that supports the implants. Even though it might be a little too hard to identify its symptoms at an early stage by yourself, you can always get help from a dentist. If you try to understand whether or not you have peri-implantitis, you may simply confuse it with an easily treatable gum disease, but underlying issues should be detected by a professional.
Early Symptoms of Peri-implantitis Problem
• Palpate your jaw around the implant by pressing gently and if there is any fluid coming out, it is better to take a closer look.
• If the fluid is transparent then there is nothing to worry, but if the fluid is thicker and/or white, it is a common sign of peri-implantitis.
• You can also try to understand by only looking at your gums. If your gums look more red than usual and if there is any swelling around your implant, it can be a sign of peri-implantitis as well.
• You might also feel pain and sensitivity around that area while you are eating/drinking something too hot or cold.
If you are experiencing one or more symptoms above, you should visit a dentist for a detailed examination.
Treatment of Peri- implantitis Problem
Treatment techniques and procedures might change depending on the problem. If peri-implantitis is diagnosed at an early level, it can be cured with effective medications within a week. But if it is not at an early stage, you might need to undergo a surgical procedure which covers the taking out of the implants and replacing the bone or tissue loss around the area. After replacing the bone or tissue loss, you might need to wait a couple of weeks for healing before getting your implant back.
