Inlay / Onlay Dental Fillings

Inlays and Onlays are single pieces that are used to cover specific parts of the damaged tooth. If any of your teeth experienced big damage that makes it impossible to support a simple filling yet not completely damaged for a crown treatment, you can get inlays or onlays. Onlays cover the upper part of the tooth. Inlays, on the other hand, only fill the part between the cusps. Both have varieties that are made out of amalgam, composite, or glass ionomer. One of the most common filling materials is porcelain as it provides the same durability but more affordable than the other options.

More Details on Inlays and Onlays

• Dental fillings are made out of gold, silver, porcelain, silica, and alumina.

• According to their durability, gold and silver inlays and onlays have longer effects. But most of the time they are not preferred due to their high prices and colors. These types of inlays and onlays are mostly used for molars.

• Porcelain inlays and onlays are the widely used types as they offer long durability and affordable prices.

Different Characteristics of Inlays and Onlays

While inlays fill the area between the cusps, onlays cover the cusps of the tooth. To decide which is a better option for you, your dentist will check your tooth first and if needed he/she may want to see an X-ray as well. If the problem only occurs on top of your tooth, you need to get an only. But if the problem is deeper than that and between the cusps, the inlay will be a better option for you.

There is no extra care needed except good oral hygiene. So you’ll be very comfortable with your inlays and onlays as long as you brush your teeth twice and use floss. Don’t delay your dentist visits every six months so you can be informed about an upcoming problem if there’ll be any.

After Getting Dental Fillings

• For the first two hours after the treatment, you shouldn’t be drinking and eating anything.

• After about 2 hours, you can go back to your daily life and start eating and drinking.

• Other than that, there’s nothing you need to be careful about while having inlays and onlays.
