Bone graft

Bone graft or bone grafting is a procedure in which the damaged or diseased bone structure is replaced with a transplant. It can be applied to any part of the body depending on the patient’s overall needs and one of the most common bone grafting procedures is known to be the dental bone graftings.

Bone loss around jaws are generally linked with losing teeth. Teeth loss may occur due to several reasons including poor oral health, a traumatic accident or decay. At the same time, patients can also experience bone loss around those teeth which is very common.

Any kind of tooth problem also affects gums and the jaw bones. So if there’s any loss of bone around the chin, it should be filled and implanted before another treatment such as crowns or implants. A sufficient bone mass in the jaw is a necessity to make the dental implant strong and long lasting.

More On Bone Graft Procedures

Bone graft can be considered as the first step of implants or crowns.

The procedure can be regarded as surgical procedures and applied under local or general anesthesia. If the bone loss is excessive, a patient might need to be under general anesthesia.

Healing period varies among different procedures but it generally takes 2 months to 6 months.

Once the healing is completed and bone graft is ready to be worked on, patients can continue with implant or crown procedures.

On a side note, some orthodontic treatments may require bone grafting procedures too.
